Enjoy Playing Zombotron 2: Time Machine
I dove into Zombotron 2: Time Machine expecting another run-and-gun sidescroller, but what I got was a surprisingly clever twist on the genre. You still blast through pixelated hordes of undead with an arsenal of overpowered weapons, but now there’s this neat time-travel gimmick that shakes up every level. One minute you’re mowing down brain-dead skeletons in a medieval graveyard; the next you’re dodging futuristic laser turrets in a neon-lit cityscape. It’s all tied together by this cartoony, slightly tongue-in-cheek plot about patching up time anomalies and stopping history from collapsing.
As you hop in and out of different eras, you pick up new weapons and gadgets tailored to each age—bows and flaming arrows when you’re stomping through a castle courtyard, high-tech plasma rifles when you land in the far future. The transitions feel smooth enough that you don’t lose momentum; when one battle ends, you’re right back into the action in the next timeline. That constant shift keeps you on your toes, and it’s a nice break from the same-old zombie apocalypse routine.
Controls are simple and responsive, which is great when you need split-second jumps or to dodge a charging troll or an energy blast. There are a few light puzzle elements—like activating old levers to reroute power or blasting frozen ice blocks—but nothing so complex that it slows down the pace. Collecting coins and upgrade parts along the way means you can always buy something new from the shop, whether it’s more ammo capacity or a beefier armor suit to soak up hits.
By the time I wrapped up, I was pretty impressed with how polished the whole package feels. Visually, it’s not groundbreaking, but the art style has enough charm that you don’t mind the always-looming zombie threat. If you’re into fast-paced platform shooters and don’t mind hopping around history for a bit of variety, Zombotron 2: Time Machine is a fun way to spend an afternoon blowing away the undead by moonlight—and sometimes by steampunk cannon blast, too.
