You’re part of a specialized crew sent to investigate a remote space station that’s suddenly gone silent after being attacked and apparently overrun by some seriously nasty, evil creatures from somewhere beyond. So, it’s got that classic, claustrophobic sci-fi horror setup that many know and love, and it does a good job of mixing intense first-person shooter action with those ever-present horror vibes. Your primary mission is to fight your way through the desolate station, blast a whole lot of alien monsters, and ultimately uncover the terrifying mystery behind what caused this catastrophic attack.
As you cautiously make your way through the darkened corridors and eerie labs of the besieged station, you’re doing more than just shooting at anything that moves. You’ve also got to keep an eye out for hidden key cards to unlock new areas and restricted doors, and you’ll need to search for PDA devices left behind by the unfortunate former crew members. These PDAs often contain vital snippets of the backstory, gradually revealing the shady and dangerous experiments that were being conducted on the station before everything went sideways. And, of course, you’ll need to find and utilize a variety of high-tech weaponry to defend yourself against all sorts of grotesque alien creatures that are very keen on making you their next victim. The game’s 3D graphics and the generally eerie, oppressive atmosphere do a decent job of pulling you into this dangerous and isolated world.
If you’re the kind of gamer who likes their horror served with a generous helping of action and enjoys the thrill of blasting alien monstrosities, then Portal of Doom: Undead Rising will probably be right up your alley. It’s got that satisfying gameplay loop of exploring creepy environments, piecing together a mystery by finding clues, and then letting loose with your arsenal when things get hairy. It definitely caters to fans who enjoy both blowing stuff up with futuristic guns and getting a bit spooked by what’s lurking around the next corner.
