About the Game

Oh man, Pokémon SoulSilver! If you have even an ounce of nostalgia for the original Pokémon Silver game from the Game Boy Color days, then this Nintendo DS remake is like a beautiful, pixelated dream come true. It takes absolutely everything that was magical about the original Johto adventures and gives it a stunning graphical overhaul, along with a treasure trove of new features, all while perfectly preserving that timeless charm. You kick off your grand journey in the beloved Johto region, and you get to make that classic tough choice between the adorable grass-type Chikorita, the fiery Cyndaquil, or the cool and collected water-type Totodile as your very first Pokémon partner. It strikes this perfect chord, offering a huge wave of nostalgia for us old-timers while being an absolutely fantastic and welcoming starting point for new players diving into Pokémon for the first time.

One of the absolute standout features of Pokémon SoulSilver – and something people still talk about – was the inclusion of the Pokéwalker. This was this nifty little pedometer device that came packaged with the game, and you could wirelessly transfer one of your Pokémon from your DS into it. Then, just by walking around in your daily life, your Pokémon would gain experience points, and you could find items or even catch new Pokémon! It was such an innovative way to interact with your game. And that’s not all; SoulSilver was the game that really brought to life the feature where the first Pokémon in your party would actually follow you around on the overworld map, trotting along behind your character, which just made your bond feel so much more personal and real. With the DS’s enhanced touch-screen controls for easier menu navigation and its Wi-Fi capabilities for battling and trading, the whole experience felt incredibly interactive and modern at the time.

Pokémon SoulSilver is celebrated, and rightly so, for its absolutely massive scope and the sheer amount of gameplay it offers. Not only do you get to explore the entire, sprawling Johto region, collecting its eight unique gym badges and taking on the Elite Four, but after you’ve conquered them, guess what? The game opens up even further, and you get to travel to the Kanto region – the setting of the original Pokémon Red and Blue games – and collect another eight badges there! That’s a staggering sixteen gym badges in total! It’s an incredibly comprehensive package that pays loving homage to the original masterpiece while seamlessly integrating modern enhancements and offering an adventure that can last for hundreds of hours. It’s a true fan favorite for so many reasons.
